In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus said “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
According to the words of Jesus, baptism should be the first step of obedience in the life of a person who commits their life to follow Christ.
The word “baptizing” comes from the Greek word “baptizo” which means to dip, to submerge, to go under, to sink, to wash, to make clean. Baptism is the act of submerging a follower of Jesus under the water and raising them up out of the water.
Jesus was baptized at the beginning of His ministry. Every follower of Jesus is commanded to follow His example.
On the day of Pentecost, Peter preached and many people committed their life to follow Jesus. Acts 2:41 says, “So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them.” CSB
Baptism is significant for three reasons:
1) Baptism is an act of obedience that honors the command of Jesus.
2) Baptism is a personal and public proclamation declaring faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation.
3) Baptism is symbolic of death to the old life of sin and resurrection to a new life in relationship with Jesus Christ.
Through the act of baptism, followers of Jesus portray what He did to save sinners.
Romans 6:3-5 “. . . are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we were buried with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of his resurrection.” CSB
Every follower of Jesus that is baptized— submerged in water— identifies with His death and burial and is then raised out of the water to identify with His resurrection.
Authentic faith motivates followers of Jesus to be baptized in obedience to His command.
If you have committed your life to Jesus and have not publicly declared your new life in Him through baptism, prayerfully consider this and make baptism your next step.
